Quality Blog Comments

LI: to understand what is expected of a quality blog comment.

The qualities expected of a good comment are the greeting, the connections or compliments, personal feedback, a question and the farewell. For this comment, I greeted Kalei and made a connection saying that I have also registered for the Summer Learning Journey program. I was curious whether Kalei needed to improvise in order to get any of the items, and what they thought the purpose of the task was, so I asked them.

A quality comment should have an open question, that helps continue the conversation. You should use positive language such as “Next time you could..” or “Instead, you should..” rather than negative language such as “Don’t” or “Do not”.

One-Line Artwork

LI: To create a simple piece of art using one line.

For this simple and easy Summer Learning Journey, I drew a picture of a cat using one continuous line throughout the whole drawing. When finished, we color in the solid shapes with a plain color.

I enjoyed this Summer Learning Journey task because it was easy to do, but also enjoyable at the same time. I look forward to participating in more challenging activities.

Unleash Your Inner Artist

LI: to prepare for the upcoming Summer Learning Journey program of 2022-2023.

For this kick start task, we coloured in a cultural and religious art piece. I chose to color in a Kwanzaa art piece which is an African holiday or celebration. I coloured in using bright and vibrant colors and then used darker shades of grey and black for the minor pieces.

For the step it up task, we created a manga character using a google program that provides you with a random anime template that you can change to your liking and also color. I created an original manga character.

This is part of the Summer Learning Journey preparation program. The Summer Learning Journey is a program to help prevent the summer slide which is the drop in academic performance by students after the holidays. During the holidays, students are given creative and interesting tasks to complete for 6 weeks during the holiday. Additionally, students can comment on others blogs of the Summer Learning Journey to earn extra points and thus, earning them prizes at the end of the program.

Attempt New Things & Ask for Help

LI: Students will learn that it’s okay to try new things and to ask for help when needed.

For PB4L, we are reminding ourselves why it is important to attempt to do new things and to ask for help. This session encourages students and people so that they can continue doing what they find interest in or so they can improve their academic performance.

It is important to attempt new things because if you are afraid to do something, if you try to do it then it might not be as scary as you anticipated. It is important to ask for help so that you don’t get stuck on a subject.

I found this task educational because it reminded me why it is important to attempt new things and ask for help.

Roman Numerals

LI: to learn how to recognize and use roman numerals in maths by expanding our understanding of ancient numbers.

Roman numerals are how Romans said or recognized numbers in ancient history and this system is still being used to this day. The characters used in the Roman numeral system are I, V, X, L, C, D and M and they eat consist of a certain value that the Romans use to tell numbers.

I represents 1, V represents 5, X represents 10, L represents 50, C represents 100, D represents 500 and M represents 1000. When smaller values are put before characters with larger values, we subtract. When larger values are put before characters with smaller values, we add.

I enjoyed this maths lesson because I learnt how to recognize and understand Roman numerals that I can use during maths and number knowledge.

Match Girls Strike of 1888

LI: To identify the significance of the Match Girls Strike of 1888.

Today we had a session with David, our PB4L leader. He was teaching us about the match girls strike of 1888. This Strike of 1888 explains the hardships that the match girls went through, this eventually led to a protest trying to raise awareness for women who don’t get appreciate their hard work by not getting paid.

I found this task interesting and fun because I am already familiar with what happened during the Match Girls Strike of 1888 and I enjoyed sharing my knowledge on the event. An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was the press/firm might have stayed quiet about the events despite knowing what was going on because they did not want to get introuble with the Bryant & May producers because they have wealth and power.

Pangārau – Kei hea?

LI: to revise position and color using shapes.

For our final lesson of Maori this year with Whaea Odie, we revised recognizing the position and color. Maui means left, matau means right and waenganui means in the middle. Raro means down or under, and runga means up or above. We used this word knowledge to answer multiple questions on the position of shapes and coloured stars in this slideshow.

I enjoyed our final lesson because we also revised our knowledge with introductions in Maori by playing a game where we answer questions and can only speak in Maori.

Formal and Informal Language

LI: To identify the style of a piece of text – informal/formal.

Formal language is used in professional situations and consists of proper grammar and sophisticated vocabulary/language, but is commonly considered as ‘use of manners’. Informal language lacks the use of proper grammar and manners and is used in unprofessional situations in which the speaker is more comfortable. Our task was to identify what makes formal and informal language different.

Formal language does not use contractions, idioms, phrasal verbs, abbreviations, imperatives or exclamation marks whereas informal language does use them. Formal language uses passive voice whereas informal language uses active voice.

I found this task interesting because I learnt about the different aspects of language that make formal and informal speaking different. I can apply this knowledge to speak differently corresponding to different situations.

Manaiakalani Film Festival 2022

Today, Panmure Bridge School and the rest of our Manaiaklani cluster visited the Hoyts Cinema at Sylvia Park to celebrate the annual Manaiakalani Film Festival. The Manaiakalni Film Festival is an event where the schools within the Manaiakalani cluster come together and showcase a series of short films made from different classes to share new ideas and inspire eachother.

The schools within the Manaiakalani cluster are Panmure Bridge School, Sommerville, Point England School, Fidelis, Ruapotaka School, Glenbrae School, Tamaki College, Glen Innes School, Stonefield School and Glen Taylor School.

My favorite film this year was by Tamaki College called ‘Tamaki’s Got Talent’ because it was a showcase of different student’s musical talent and I found it very interesting and entertaining. – Tamaki’s Got Talent

Transportation

LI: to identify the 4 different modes of transport and their changes over time.

The 4 different modes of transport are air, land, sea and rail. We explored more about the types of transportation and how they have evolved over time to build an understanding of how humanity makes changes to vehicles like cars, boats, trains and planes.

An example of air, land, sea and rail based vehicles are planes and helicopters, cars and trucks, boats and yachts and trains and trams.

I found this task challenging because I had to include simple and interesting information about sea, land, air and rail based vehicles. An interesting fact I learnt during this activity was that there are multiple inventors that are mistaken to be the creator of the plane and society has confused different inventors as the first people to make a plane.
