One-Line Artwork

LI: To create a simple piece of art using one line.

For this simple and easy Summer Learning Journey, I drew a picture of a cat using one continuous line throughout the whole drawing. When finished, we color in the solid shapes with a plain color.

I enjoyed this Summer Learning Journey task because it was easy to do, but also enjoyable at the same time. I look forward to participating in more challenging activities.

Unleash Your Inner Artist

LI: to prepare for the upcoming Summer Learning Journey program of 2022-2023.

For this kick start task, we coloured in a cultural and religious art piece. I chose to color in a Kwanzaa art piece which is an African holiday or celebration. I coloured in using bright and vibrant colors and then used darker shades of grey and black for the minor pieces.

For the step it up task, we created a manga character using a google program that provides you with a random anime template that you can change to your liking and also color. I created an original manga character.

This is part of the Summer Learning Journey preparation program. The Summer Learning Journey is a program to help prevent the summer slide which is the drop in academic performance by students after the holidays. During the holidays, students are given creative and interesting tasks to complete for 6 weeks during the holiday. Additionally, students can comment on others blogs of the Summer Learning Journey to earn extra points and thus, earning them prizes at the end of the program.

New Zealand Bird Silhouettes

LI: To learn how to use tone, blending and different brush strokes with paint.

We have been learning how to incorporate tones, blending and brush strokes with our art using paint. We chose a bird that is endemic to New Zealand and researched five facts about them. We chose birds because the New Zealand bird of the year award is going to be announced soon on the 31st of October. We looked through different videos that taught us about the technique used in order to get a nice background.

I found this activity fun and interesting because I learnt something new about art and applied my knowledge to a workpiece.

Ukelele Class

Today, LS2 had their first self-lesson of ukelele. We learnt the cords C, F, and G major whilst using an instructional Youtube video that also told us how to hold, strum and press cords on the ukelele.

We learnt about the frets, strings, fretboard, body, tuners and neck of the ukelele so we could get used to using the ukelele in general. After we practiced the cords, we learnt how to play “you are my sunshine” as a class.

I found this session fun and educational because I learnt how to use a ukelele and was able to play a simple song. I hope to strengthen my knowledge afterwards and play more complicated songs on the ukelele.

Pastel Portrait

LI: to experiment with shapes, patterns, blending and pastels while creating an abstract artpiece.

Over the past week, LS2 has been getting creative during multiple sessions of art where we create an abstract self portait art piece. This activity has helped us improve a variety of skills like blending, precision, and experimentation with shapes and colour hues.

This artpiece has one side of cold colours, and the other with warm colours. Cold colours are colours in which their hues are similar to blue, purple or green. Warm colours are colours who’s hue is similar to red, orange or yellow.

To make this art piece, we used chalk to mark out the center of the paper. From there, we created the neck and head shape and outlined the eyes, eyebrows, mouth/lips, ears, nose, hair and other details we may have wanted to include like eyelashes and cheekbones. The left side of the face had to the be the side profile of the portrait, and the right side had to be the front profile of the portrait. This was so we could experiment with perspective.

I enjoyed this art task very much because I was able to develop more precision, blending, pastelling skills as well as work on using shapes, colour combinations and patterns in my art. I would recommend this task to people who have an interest in art/artistic activities and those who are familiar with many different shapes as I suspect they would have fun using different figures to make their art unique.

Whale Tail

The harakeke grows green in spring, red flowers bloom from the core. The three baskets of knowledge were weaved from New Zealand flax in the Maori myth of the 3 ketes.

The background is light blue, representing the clear sky. The overgrown harakeke floods the whale tail, with dark stems of read flowers growing from the core. In the corner, the three baskets of knowledge made from the flax are pinned to the sky, hanging high above New Zealand.

Huarere Colouring Page

For Maori this week, we revised the different words for weather types in Maori. Some words included foggy, hot, warm, cold and rainy. We had to identify and match the right words for weather types so we could understand how to answer the question “He aha te huarere?” properly.

After we finished and marked our work, we created a colouring poster on the different weather types that could be printed and coloured in by the juniors. My colouring poster consists of four different types of weather; sunny, snowy/frosty, rainy and stormy. Whaea Odie will then print out our posters and give them to the juniors to color.

Bee Art

Today, we took part in an art challenge inspired by Raku Inoue, who makes insects and bugs with reusable objects he finds in his garden. Our task was to create a bee using different things we found around our school.

For the body, we used wet grass because we know that it is easy to mold, and for support, we used spiked seed pods underneath the grass. For the wings, we used a variety of different shaped leaves that were multiple different colors. For the legs, we used thinly shaped sticks that we found near the trees. For the stripes, we used yellow leaves and the outside of the bee art has flower petals.

Kadinsky

For the past couple of weeks LS2 has been investigating mood and atmosphere. We started by reading a variety of ANZAC poems, and highlighting how each sentence made us feel. Afterwards we answered different questions about how we felt during the poems.

Our next step was to listen to a montage of music, and use colors to represent how we felt listening to each song. The circles had to be concentric, meaning they started in the middle of our page, and progressed outwards. This art was based off a russian artist by the name of Wassily Kandinsky. He would normally listen to opera music and paint how he feels.
